EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, INSTITUTE FOR FAMILIES
POSITION DESCRIPTION AND REQUIREMENTS
Under the direction of the Dean of the Rutgers University School of Social Work, the Executive Director of the Institute For Families serves as the chief executive officer of a fully developed academic institute in a Research I University. We seek a proven leader capable of developing constructive partnerships with internal and external constituents who has demonstrated experience in strategic planning and constructive problem-solving.
Formally established in 2007, the mission of the Institute for Families in the Rutgers University School of Social Work is to support and strengthen individuals, families and communities in New Jersey, the United States and globally by building the capacity of social work and human services professionals and organizations. To achieve this mission, the Institute offers a broad array of professional development, training, service, research and program evaluation activities which include:
- The largest university-based continuing education program of its kind in the United States, delivering over 300 workshops annually in multiple locations throughout New Jersey and offering 15 certificate programs in key social work and human service practice areas;
- Operation of the Child Support Institute supported by a four year contract, with the State of New Jersey, totaling in excess of $20 million, to provide year-round training at three remote locations, as well as on-site technical assistance and distance learning through the Internet, for 2,500 individuals including judges, probation officers, county welfare workers and others;
- Serving as lead institution in a four-university child welfare training consortium, in partnership with the State of New Jersey, providing training to both public and private agency workers engaged in the provision of services, collecting and analyzing administrative data;
- Managing a portfolio of research and program evaluation activities under contract with multiple levels of governmental and nonprofit organizations;
- Collaboration with faculty of the University in the creation and dissemination of knowledge to inform and enhance the professional practice of social work and allied human services; and,
- Serving as a forum for the examination of policy issues and practices related to enhancing social justice for vulnerable populations.
The Executive Director effectively leads and manages the day-to-day operations and administration of all of the above activities, including the staff of 70+ individuals and an annual budget exceeding $9 million. The Executive Director also collaborates with leadership in academic, government, foundation and corporate communities for the purposes of raising funds for the Institute, disseminating knowledge, and building partnerships to achieve the mission of the Institute.
This is a twelve-month calendar year appointment as a non-tenure track member of the faculty of the School of Social Work. The Executive Director will be expected to teach two courses per year. A competitive salary is offered commensurate with the education and experience of the successful candidate along with a comprehensive fringe benefit package offered by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
Requirements for this position include:
- Master’s degree in social work (MSW) or a a closely related field (a Ph.D. in social work or a related field or a J. D. is preferred)
- Ten years of progressively responsible experience in the administration of social work or allied human services programs (previous experience in an academic setting preferred).
Additional Qualifications:
The Executive Director must have a successful track record and proven skills in all phases of administration and operations--strategic planning, development, finance, human resources, academic program development, and program monitoring and evaluation. A proven record of success in leading a program and/or institution in an academic or professional environment is highly desirable. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills are essential.
