Director, Psychological Clinic
Position Description
The University of Michigan is seeking a strong clinician scholar (scientist practitioner) with administrative experience in a mental health setting to lead the Institute for Human Adjustment’s (IHA) Psychological Clinic (Clinic). This position offers an exciting opportunity to provide overall leadership for the Clinic’s clinical service and clinical training programs, and for the planned expansion of the Clinic’s research initiatives. The position may be made available to the strongest candidate as either a 50% appointment (Clinic Director and clinical training/supervision responsibilities) or a 100% appointment (Clinic Director and expanded clinical training/supervision and clinical service responsibilities). It is an ideal position for an instructional track (tenured) or clinical track faculty member at the University of Michigan, who could assume a 50% appointment in combination with an ongoing faculty role.
The Clinic Director will report directly to the IHA Director. The salary will be competitive based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. We hope to fill the position with a candidate who can begin to fulfill responsibilities in January of 2010. However, some flexibility in starting date is possible.
The Clinic is located on the University of Michigan campus and serves adults 18 and olderfrom the greater Ann Arbor area. The Clinic offers an APA-accredited training program for clinical psychology graduate students (with overall administration by the IHA), practicum placements for clinical psychology graduate students, and postdoctoral training in psychology. It also offers field placements for the UM Clinical Social Work program. Integration with University departments and other University units is encouraged, with an emphasis on academic collaborations involving faculty and students.
Basic Function and Responsibility
The Clinic Director provides overall leadership for the clinical, training and research programs; evaluates the effectiveness of departmental operations and implements organizational changes; directs the implementation of the clinical program’s objectives, policies, procedures and activities (including the development and implementation of agency seminars); oversight for fiscal and human resource planning and allocation, marketing, fundraising and administrative operations.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Monitor and ensure the welfare of patients seen by trainees; structure the activities of the trainees to ensure provision of competent services; facilitate the trainees’ personal and professional development; provide formative and summative evaluation of the trainees’ clinical work and professional behavior. Work with trainees to fulfill the academic/professional requirements of their practicum/internship/post-doctoral fellowship.
Provide leadership in planning the overall strategic direction of the Clinic. Manage the administrative, financial and marketing operations including billing procedures of 3rdparty payers. Initiate fund raising efforts andexplore supplementary funding sources for training and service activities. Ensure compliance with standards of external agencies including the American Psychological Association and HIPAA regulations.
Qualifications
The qualifications for this position are a PhD in clinical psychology; licensure in the State of Michigan; significant training and clinical experience in the scientist practitioner model, including the provision of evidence-based assessment and treatment services; clinical supervisory experience; and a minimum of 5 years of post-graduate experience in a mental health setting. Additional qualifications include administrative or managerial experience in a mental health setting, an understanding and appreciation of overall University objectives and of the academic goals of graduate education, and an ability to successfully navigate the complexities of a university setting.
