2011 Hispanic Higher Education Scholarship Fund
Overview: The Hispanic Higher Education Scholarship Fund (HHESF) aims at increasing the number of available bilingual individuals of Hispanic origin to meet the behavioral health needs of Hispanics. The HHESF is specifically targeted to individuals of Hispanic origin who are proficient in English and Spanish and possess a baccalaureate degree acceptable in the United States, who are interested in or are pursuing a Master’s degree in Social Work from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited college or university, and who commit to working at a New Jersey-based community mental health center for one year during or after their Master’s program. The HHESF is administered by the National Resource Center for Hispanic Mental Health. The amount of and the number of scholarships to be given will be determined by the funds raised up to the scholarship notification date, and is based on money generated through the National Resource Center for Hispanic Mental Health’s fundraising efforts for the scholarship fund.
Eligibility:
- Scholarships are available on a competitive basis to graduates of undergraduate programs who will be pursuing a Master’s degree in social work from a CSWE accredited college or university in Fall 2010, and to current graduate students enrolled in a CSWE accredited Master’s in Social Work program who will be returning to graduate school in fall 2010.
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States of Hispanic background who are proficient in both English and Spanish. Applicants must also be able to provide additional socio-demographical data if provided a scholarship award in order for award to be processed.
- Applicants must be bilingual (English and Spanish) in both their verbal and written communications.
- Applicants must be able to participate in a Scholarship Awards Reception to be held in Fall 2010 on a date and time to be determined by the National Resource Center for Hispanic Mental Health.
- Each applicant must commit to working at a New Jersey-based community mental health center for one year during or after completing the Master’s program.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Deadline for Applications: May 31, 2011
The National Resource Center for Hispanic Mental Health will evaluate all applications that are received by the deadline. Applications must be postmarked by May 31, 2010 in order to be considered. The applications are reviewed for completeness and then evaluated for eligibility. Selection is determined by the Hispanic Higher Education Scholarship Fund Selection Committee and is based on the applicant's completed application and personal telephone interview.
Notification of Award: Between June 15, 2011 and June 30, 2011
All applicants who met the deadline will receive written notification of their award status between June 15 and June 30, 2010. All applicants will be notified in writing no later than June 30, 2010.
Scholarship Distribution: To be determined – Fall 2011
The scholarships will be awarded at a reception to be held on a date and location yet to be determined when funds are adequate to make such awards. The scholarship checks will be made payable to and mailed directly to the college or university, on behalf of the student. Checks will not be made out to the student.

The National Resource Center for Hispanic Mental Health reserves the right to modify or amend this policy at any time, or to enlarge, reduce or eliminate the program in any manner, including by increasing or reducing funding levels, or eliminating funding altogether. The foregoing reservation of rights will not apply to awards already made and announced.
